This project was to change an existing laminate counter to an updated new one. We were in and out in less than a day, and all the materials were readily available at the local box stores.
This kitchen renovation project involved removing the old laminate counter top and backspalsh, which was in sections. Then replacing the counters with a new pre-laminated counter top. The section of counter tops needed to be cut with a fine tooth laminate blade on the table saw to fit the surface area. Then the outside facing edges still need laminate as they are unfinished at the cut edges.
To finish the edges of a new laminate top we used an edge kit made with the same laminate pattern as out counter. The kit includes two laminate pieces, cut to roughly the same contour and shape as the top, (edges and backsplashes have different edge profiles, and you must be sure to get the kit with the same profile) and a few filler pieces. Once the laminate tops are cut, place one of the two edge pieces onto the edge surface and use a hot clothes iron to press the pre-glued edge piece onto the body of the counter, and then burnish the laminate until flat and smooth. The piece from the kit should overhang the edges of the top on all sides. The final step is to use a router to trim the laminate right to the edge, and make a nice clean cut on the edge piece once the glue has cured.
